Evo Japan will make a triumphant return in 2023. This time the spin-off of the Japanese fighting tournament will take place at Tokyo Big Sight. Tokyo Big Sight is the convention center that hosts other major events such as Comietto. Evo Japan 2023 will include Guilty Gear Strive, The King of Fighters XV, Street Fighter V: Champion Edition and Tekken 7.
“It is joyful to see Evo Japan return to Tokyo for the global fighting game community,” he said Evoit’s Rick Thiher, inside a blog post. “Japan is the birthplace of competitive fighting games and we look forward to opening the doors to Tokyo Big Sight next spring to continue celebrating their legacy with players and fans around the world.”
Having an Evo event in Japan is a big deal in the fighting community. In addition to being the birthplace of fighting games, Japan is home to many amazing players. Events hosted in Japan are an opportunity for players who cannot travel to Las Vegas to show off and perhaps win a title.
Evo Japan 2023 will run from March 31 to April 2, 2023.
Barring unfortunate circumstances
The previous event, Evo Japan 2020, was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate-centric tournament that had nearly 3000 entrants. The rise of Covid-19 and eventual lockdowns have put an end to tournaments for a few years.
This announcement seems to suggest that Japan will be open to travel by March 2023. At the time of writing, Japan is experiencing another huge upsurge in Covid-19 infections. The country, in terms of tourism, is in full lockdown for individual travelers.
The nation, at this moment, is at a standstill offering guided tours with a series of requirements that visitors must follow. However, whether or not that will happen by 2023 is in the air. Or, more importantly, whether or not someone participating in Evo counts as an individual traveler or not.
